Only a week left to enter the 9th Annual Laguna Bluebelt Photo Contest for March 31 deadline

Tuesday, March 31 is the deadline for entering the Annual Laguna Bluebelt Photo Contest. Entrants don’t need to be pros, because there are two categories – Professional and Amateur.

To qualify for the Professional category, entrants must be paid for or sell their images, while shooting either full-time or part-time.

The entry, one per person, must have been taken of Laguna’s Marine Protected Areas either over or underwater during the past year between March 3, 2019 and today.

Those submitting should fill out the form on the contest webpage at and upload their photo.

The photo can be taken on the beach, underwater, on a kayak, or SUP and of any subject the entrant wishes. It can be of anything within one of the MPAs that interests the photographer. It could include family and friends enjoying the beach, the tidepools or ocean, the birds or marine life that depend on it, or just any part of this special place.

2019 First Place Amateur winner Gregg Howe – “Colorful Crab”

Laguna Bluebelt is pleased to announce the judges for the 2020 contest include Tom Lamb, Mitch Ridder, Patsee Ober, and Cliff Wassmann. Judges will place emphasis upon photos that celebrate Laguna’s ocean environment and promote awareness and respect for the Laguna Bluebelt.

Winners will be selected based on aesthetic value, unique representation of our Marine Protected Areas, and technical skill. The judges are looking for images that depict Laguna’s MPAs in a creative, interesting, new, and fun way. Care should be given to the overall strength of composition, show a compelling point of interest within the image, have the main subject be in sharp focus unless motion blur is used for creative purposes, tell a story if possible with the image, and make use of an appealing quality of light.

Consider making a special donation to the Laguna Bluebelt Coalition. The organization is committed to helping educate and encourage protection of our new reserves. Laguna Bluebelt works to help inspire and educate residents and visitors alike on how to care for our Marine Protected Areas as well as strive for ways to improve the water quality of our ocean. The Laguna Bluebelt Coalition thanks the community and all of our participating sponsors for their ongoing support and commitment to the restoration of Laguna’s marine life.
