Sign-ups open for Spring 2020 Breakers girls youth basketball players

In preparation for the upcoming 2020 season, sign-ups have begun for the Breakers girls youth basketball team. This program is for girls from first through eighth grades.

Coach Matthew Tietz says, “We believe this club program is dramatically improving the development of our youth players and better preparing them for competing at high school level. The teams will be coached by the high school coaching staff. We run most of the same drills, plays, offenses, and defenses that high school team runs. We are focused on developing complete basketball players ready to compete physically, fundamentally, and mentally at the high school level and to have the girls enjoying the process.”

The program will be fielding two tournament teams: a 7th/8th grade team and 4th/5th/6th grade team. Coach Tietz says, “This is an inclusive club open for anyone who wants to participate. Players do not have to ‘make the team,’ however, space is limited as we will cut off the sign-ups at 10 players per team unless we have enough for two teams at an age group. Spots are awarded on a first come, first served basis.”

In addition to the tournament teams and their practices, the coach will have a twice per week “clinic” for players that want the experience and training but don’t want to play in the tournaments. Although geared more towards the younger girls, this is open to anyone.

“We will once again be hosting tournaments at Laguna Beach High School that will be run by our girls high school team,” says Coach Tietz. Breaker teams will play anywhere from two to five games each of these weekends: March 28 and 29, April 18 and 19, May 9 and 10, and May 30 and 31.

Practices will start March 3 and run through May 28.

Practices will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Each team will get one-and-one-half hour practices twice per week. It has not been finalized which teams will practice on which days or at which times.

The cost is $200 to be on a tournament team.

The cost is $100 to attend the non-tournament clinic practices.

Jerseys will be provided by the team and need to be returned at the end of the season (unless a player already owns one).
