Social Compassion rolling out newly created humane education curriculum

Laguna Beach’s Social Compassion, a 501(c)(3) organization, and sister group to the well-known animal advocacy group Social Compassion in Legislation, has partnered with Volunteers of America - Los Angeles (VOALA) and Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers (HEART) to develop and implement a humane education curriculum for Head Start programs.

The three organizations collaborated to create the humane education and social-emotional learning curriculum entitled “Kindness for All,” consisting of seven lessons that will be provided in an educational resource guide for the teachers at the Head Start programs.

In a society facing global issues like interpersonal violence, pollution, animal cruelty, and poverty, humane education can have a broad and lasting impact by addressing a range of challenges simultaneously. Voluminous data shows an extremely high correlation between animal cruelty and human violence.

“Since our founding in 2007, one of Social Compassion’s central goals has been to expand humane education in California,” said Judie Mancuso, President and Founder of Social Compassion. “We are honored and grateful to partner with both HEART and VOALA to create this program and teach Los Angeles area children about being compassionate towards humans, animals, and how to be good stewards to the environment. This type of education is needed now more than ever before to instill compassion at the youngest of age.”

“We greatly appreciate this supportive and dynamic collaboration with Social Compassion and Volunteers of America Los Angeles,” said Meena Alagappan, Executive Director of HEART. “We are excited to implement this new Pre-K humane education curriculum widely, inspiring young children to act with kindness toward animals, people, and our natural world.”

“We have worked with Social Compassion over the years and are thrilled to have their creative and financial support in collaborating with HEART on the development of this humane education curriculum,” said Bob Pratt, President of Volunteers of America Los Angeles. “We are excited to roll out this program initially to 75 Los Angeles area Head Start programs with more to follow.”

The three groups are making the “Kindness for All” curriculum free for other schools and programs to use.
