Jade Howson claims two gold medals at ISA World SUP & Paddleboard Championships

Jade Howson, Athlete of the Year for the 2020 Patriots Day Parade, won not one but two gold medals at the Surf City El Salvador ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championships last week (November 24 - December 1). She won gold in the Women’s Sprint – World Title Fastest Sprinter – competing in the women’s division even though she is only 17 years old – and she won another gold medal defending her World Title in the Girl’s Junior SUP Technical Race. (This comes one year after winning the first ISA Gold in Junior SUP Technical Race.)

Jade is a senior at Laguna Beach High School.

The ISA has been the organizer of the sole World Championship for SUP and Paddleboard since 2012. The event was first held in Peru.

According to ISA.com, “USA’s 17-year-old phenom Jade Howson took the gold in the Women’s SUP Sprint, igniting an excellent start for Team USA and showcasing the promising future that awaits her in the sport of Stand Up Paddle Racing.”

Jade’s mother Kris was in El Salvador to witness her daughter’s gold medal wins. “I do all of the international travel with Jade. My husband stays home with Moorea our other daughter and works.”

Kris says, “I think I feel all the hard work she has put forth, weeks of preparing, hours on and off the water training, balancing school and friends all coming down to this one event. I try to ease Jade’s nerves but I can’t. The nerves in my own body are firing, stomach tight, hands shaking. I just follow her around and am there for whatever she voices she needs. I can’t help her, can’t talk to her, she knows what she is doing. It’s all on her at the start line. Horn blows and I have to let it all go. I pace around the race site and prepare myself for her arrival, good or bad. Either way I am the proudest mom ever!”

Second Gold for Junior World Title

After the races, Jade told ISA, “It feels so great. Last year I won sprint bronze and I just really wanted to improve this year. I have the best teammates. We’ve all known each other for a really long time. It’s more of a family than it is a team.”

Laguna Beach residents can celebrate Jade’s wins during her appearance as Athlete of the Year at the 2020 Patriots Day Parade.
